Following the publication of the new TERA study, UNI MEI Global Union and the International Federation of Actors (FIA) raise serious concern by the destruction of jobs in the creative sector due to arge-scale commercial digital piracy. 

The study, entitled “The Economic Contribution of the Creative Industries to EU GDP and Employment”, confirms a €20 billion value destruction and 200,000 jobs destroyed for the period 2008-2011 in the core sectors of the top five markets in the EU, which represents over 70 % of the creative sector in Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK).

The study was carried out by independent Paris-based economics firm TERA Consultants and was presented last week at a briefing in the European Parliament Brussels, chaired by Mary Honeyball MEP, member of Legal affairs committee. The study is an update of a first report released in 2010 and backed by BASCAP (The International Chamber of Commerce’s Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy). 

FIA and UNI MEI call on the new Commission and the Parliament to think carefully about the future of "Creative Europe" - not to speak of the livelihoods of creators, of all workers in the creative industries and ultimately of all those that cherish a diverse, culturally rich and inspiring European Union.
