Women participants at the “Women’s Empowerment Leadership Development Workshop” were roused through a “Power Walk” activity where they were demonstrated how their social positions allow them to make a difference and take up leadership roles in a trade union. The workshop was held at the Community Education Center Malabe, Sri Lanka.

Jayasri Priyalal, UNI Apro Director for Finance Sector who facilitated the workshop, said that he hope to nurture a second line of women trade union leaders for UNI affiliates in Sri Lanka. Priyalal emphasized the importance of women taking up positions in their trade unions so as to secure equal opportunities for all.

As participants actively discussed issues and challenges depriving them of equal opportunities in workplaces and society, they are also reminded that an individuals' access to rights and equality is shaped by how much they are valued and the social positions they hold. The workshop also conducted group work and exercises aimed to boost their confidence and power where the women were imparted with skills to build relationships with their peers, and leadership skills as a union activist. 

UNI SLAC President Gayan Munaweera, Chandrika Eladaththa, Punya Ekanayaka UNI SLAC Women’s President and UNI SLAC Youth Secretary Norika Warnasuriya introduced UNI,  UNI Apro and various activities implemented by the respective committees in Sri Lanka to the workshop participants.
