A super typhoon called Haiyan (local name: Yolanda), swept through the Central Philippines on 08 November 2013, creating major loss, damage and death. The Finance unions did their best to provide immediate relief and assistance to the victims.

The National Union of Bank Employees of the Philippines (NUBE PH) contacted its members who were in the path of the storm, which hit the Visayas Region in Central Philippines, to send them relief goods as quickly as possible.  The information gathered indicated that some 200 of our members working in branches in the affected region suffered damage to their homes and other properties.

In Tacloban City, Leyte Province, Central Visayas Region, which was savaged by a four to six meter high storm surge as well as 300-km/hr winds, the homes of 48 of our union members were totally destroyed.  The houses of another 27 members in the City of Ormoc, also in Leyte Province, were either completely flattened or heavily damaged.  Fortunately, there were no deaths among our members.  However, some of them lost family members.

As of 10 December 2013, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Center (NDRRMC) reported that the number of dead was 5982, with 1,779 missing and 27,022 injured.
