The 7th UNI-Apro East Asian Postal Unions Forum, which held on 20-21 May in Tokyo, Japan, reviewed and discussed how to organize logistics sector and to defend Universal Service in postal services in the East Asia. All the participants in the forum were devoted to listen to and interested in the presentations on the endangered universal postal service by Brother Yoneda, JPGU and development of logistics business in Asia and the Pacific region by Prof. Ishihara, Tokai University. Brother Yamaguchi, President of JPGU and Chairperson of UNI-Apro Post & Logistics Sector Committee, thanked colleagues in East Asian Postal Unions for their support extended to postal union members in Japan during the merger process to the JPGU after the privatization of Japan Post in last October. He spoke out that we need to expand scale of our organization with organizing logistics industry as a starter. Each union representative from JPGU, KPWU, CPWU and UPOE made their own country reports. A special report on postal service privatization was presented by Mr. Chiba, CE of Japan Post Holdings. Brother Ito, Director of UNI-Apro P&L, introduced the development of Post and Logistics Sector and trade union organizing in the Asia-Pacific region. He encouraged postal unions at the Forum to initiate organizing in logistics industry as well as post offices. After the Forum, overseas participants visited postal facilities in Tokyo such as New Tokyo Post Office and Yoyogi Post Office and had a chance to meet with managers of Japan Post. Prior to the main Forum, management committee members gathered and reviewed the UNI Post and Logistics strategic plan for 2008-2011. The next Forum will be held in Korea hosted by KPWU.
