Are newspapers pressured to outsource print because of steep declines in ad revenue? Continued declines in revenue were reported this week by the New York Times (-12%), Gannett (-14.3%) and McClatchy (-15%)—two of those operations have already begun outsourcing the printing of their newspapers, opening up opportunities for commercial web printers. McClatchy Co. reported this week it formed a partnership with Pacific Northwest publisher Pioneer Newspapers, Inc., to print its Idaho Statesman and The Bellingham Herald. The move, McClatchy says, will significantly reducing expenses.

The NY Times has outsourced the printing of editions in California to Southwest Offset Printing, Gardena, CA and in Ontario, Buffalo and Rochester, NY to Transcontinental.

Earlier this year, Rupert Murdoch reportedly had talks with Tribune Co. chairman Sam Zell to move print production of southern Florida and Los Angeles editions of the Wall Street Journal to Tribune plants.
