Shoprite Union Alliance Demand:

Stop Stalling - Global Agreement Now!





South African retailer Shoprite Checkers continues its stalling tactics as it refuses to sign a global agreement with UNI Global Union.





Members of the Shoprite Checkers Shop Steward Union Alliance met on 15^th May in Hammameth, Tunisia to asses the situation. The meeting concluded that the workers of Shoprite Checkers often work under deficient conditions and in several places unions are not present at all.





The meeting therefore concluded that the company must sign a global agreement with UNI as the rights of people working there have to be recognised in all of the Shoprite group’s workplaces.





Negotiations have been going on with the company since 2007 and we have been met with a series of polite refusals mixed with claims of a readiness to negotiate. Shoprite Checkers must stop stalling and sign the global agreement now.





It is about time that Shoprite Checkers join the growing group of modern global companies that insist on providing decent working conditions through global agreements.





The UNI Africa commerce conference and the Shoprite Stewards Union Alliance join forces and remain resolute in their demand that Shoprite Checkers sign the global agreement no later than 1^st June 2009.
