The Swiss Communications Union presented it’s petition "No to a dismantling of the postal network" to the Director General of Post Michel Kunz and chair of its board of directors Claude Béglé. More than 158,000 signatures collected in 10 weeks, the union demands an immediate moratorium on the closure of post offices. Particularly as the delegates of the union decided to launch a “popular initiative” (or petition to the Swiss parliament) to force the maintenance of a sustainable postal network.



The President of the Swiss union, Alain Carrupt, told the leaders of the Post, on Saturday afternoon on the Rathausplatz in Bern, the 158,000 people who signed the petition have a firm opposition to the plan to dismantle the Postal network. "We are calling today for an immediate moratorium on the closure of post offices. Collecting on the ground, in the municipalities affected by the decommissioning plan, 158,000 signatures in ten weeks, we have demonstrated that the population expects the Post will continue to provide an efficient public postal service through a vast network Post offices. We demand that you hear this message that population has sent and you reverse your policy"



But the Union does not limit its commitment to the delivery of a petition. Faced on one front of the plans to dismantle the postal network, and on the other with a revision of the postal legislation which aims at full market liberalization, the union wants to put at the heart of these debates its own vision of a ambitious public postal service that fills the needs of all. Therefore at a special meeting of delegates, the union decided to launch a popular initiative which intends to enshrine in the Swiss Constitution the universal service network. And also to secure funding for it by maintaining a residual monopoly on mail, as well as the benefits of a postal bank which will remain at 100% in the hands of the Swiss Post.
