Work life balance - VNUPTW Women Conference.

150 women delegates from VNUPTW from the Southern districts of Vietnam gathered in Nha Trang, Vietnam on 18-19Sep09 to celebrate the successes and deliberate on the future campaigns of VNUPTW women. Mr. Hoang Huy Loat- President of VNUPTW in his opening speech highlighted the need to integrate women into the main stream of both the trade union movement and economical development as they comprise 51% of the Vietnam work force. He highlighted the numerous contributions of women in the trade union and society. In particular he was very please to report that one woman from VNUPTW will be receiving the Vietnam Woman Award in recognition of her contribution to the country. This year the national award was only given to 9 women. UNI Apro’s Director for Commerce, Ms. Alice Chang sends the warm greetings of Mr. Christopher Ng UNI Apro Regional Secretary to the delegates and congratulated the women in VNUPTW for the contributions to build the industry and their active role in the trade union movement. She is impressed with the continues effort of the VNUPTW in making sure that women are provided with opportunities in training, education, career and that gender equality are a priority to the union. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, Director of Economic and Social policies Department, VNUPTW highlighted the existing gender labour policies and the proposed changes to the law so that it could better achieve gender equality and improve the overall situation of Vietnamese women. She also mentioned that the VNUPTW women members actually received better working terms and conditions than that stipulated by Law. In the three separate panel discussion that involved the sharing from ordinary workers on their organizing campaigns, the trade union officers opinions on the campaigns on the rights of the workers and how the trade union had narrowed the gender gap in the trade union. The delegates were also shown video clips of the women interviews from different workplaces in the different provinces. “Its important that women fully participate in all levels in the trade union and workplace”, said Ms Ta Thi Bich Lien, Director of Women VNUPTW, “as only with such inclusive policy and action that will produce an environment that is conducive for workers especially women to balance their family life and careers”. All the delegates gave the thumbs up on the results of the work the VNUPTW Women Department as it has brought about better working conditions and narrowed the gender equality gap. The women delegates and the trade union will continued to work closely together to bring about more positive changes. ![]() ![]() |
