Solidarity with the Communication Workers Trade Union of Georgia
The Communication Workers Trade Union of Georgia informed UNI that the state controlled enterprise Georgian Post continuously violates workers and Union rights.
Salaries delayed
The salaries of the 1 500 workers were systematically delayed. The debt of the enterprise, owed to the employees, comprises now 500 000 USD. The Trade Unions demands to pay out the debt to the employees according to the labour code of Georgia.
Neglecting collective agreements
The management neglected existing collective agreements. Short-time employment has become usual practice in Georgian Post. People have no long-term perspectives anymore and are employed only for a few months.
Deduction of membership fees
The Union membership fees of 17 000 USD in total, deducted from the salaries automatically by the accounting department of the company were not forwarded to the Union. It seems that the management use it to close the budget gap of the company. This money belongs to the workers and their Unions!
Violation of Trade Unions rights
The management deprived the Trade Union office within the Georgian Post. This is violation of the legislation!
Several employees in the company were forced by the management to sign a statement confirming that they are to leave the Trade Union. This behaviour is even a violation of human rights and the ILO conventions on the right of association!
UNI Global Union demands proper recognition of Trade Union rights and supports the Communication Workers Trade Union of Georgia in their fight for Unions rights and decent wages in Georgian Post. The violation of human rights and Trade Unions rights in Europe or elsewhere in the world is not acceptable.
UNI Global Union will work with the Trade Unions to ensure the right of association, proper working conditions and fair salaries for all postal workers.
