Telenor launched operations in 7 regions in the world's 2nd largest mobile phone services market.



Unitech Wireless, Telenor's subsidiary in India, will cover regions with a total population of 600 million and will compete for their business against key rivals Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and NTT DoCoM.



India is a promising market for telecommunications companies. In October 2009, almost 490 million wireless subscriptions have been sold - the equivalent of 41% of the population of 1.2 billion people. The market for mobile phone services is expected to double in the next 4 years.



Telenor is aiming to take 8% of the nation's wireless market share and will expand its presence further in 2010.



Telenor has around 40,000 employees around the world and UNI is currently negotiating with the company in the aim of securing a global agreement which would ensure that all of its workers have the opportunity to join a union and to bargain collectively for their working conditions.
