UNI Global Union has pledged its support to Haitians in need after the devastating earthquake and aftershocks that have struck the Caribbean nation.
“This is a human tragedy that has touched people around the world,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings. “Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti and we are encouraging all of our 20 million members around the world to give what they can to help.”
UNI and UNI staff members have made generous contributions to the fundraising efforts.
UNI has supported the call for the mobilisation of humanitarian assistance to Haiti to help the population through these days of crisis, as well as with reconstruction.
UNI is reaching out to its affiliates in the Dominican Republic, like the Union Nacional de Enfermeras de Republica Dominicana (UNASED), and the trade union movement there who are crossing into Haiti to help the emergency assistance efforts. It is encouraging its affiliates to donate to national and international charities.
Unions around the globe have answered the call, pouring massive support into the country.
This includes the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada’s Humanity Fund, which has contributed $25,000 to Oxfam Quebec for emergency relief efforts. The Federazione Autonoma Bancari Italiani has donated 30,000 euros to Doctors Without Borders for earthquake relief. HK Norway donated NOK 25.000 to a Norwegian aid organisation to help the population in Haiti. UFCW Canada National Council and Immigrant Workers Centre donated $10,000 to Doctors without Borders and is encouraging its members to donate more.
