UNI Europa today joined the European trade union movement in supporting the general strike being held in Greece to protest austerity measures that are supposed to help the country out of its debt crisis.



“Greece is the victim of greedy speculators, and unscrupulous bankers like Goldman Sachs,” said UNI Europa Regional Secretary Bernadette Ségol, who was in Greece to support the strike. “Greek workers’ salaries are low — with an average salary around €1000/month — yet they are asked to pay the price and bear the burden. This will drive the country to recession and unbearable unemployment levels.”



Cutting on salaries of low income is not the solution, Ségol said. Instead high income should be taxed. The EU should show leadership and support Greek people who want a socially bearable recovery programme.



Greek people and workers want equal treatment. They want to borrow at the same rate as other countries. This is a fair demand that EU countries have to support.



UNI Europa and UNI Global Union stand in solidarity with Greek workers who demand the end of speculation at their expense and a fair and acceptable deal for the population.
