On 11 March early in the morning the workers of the courier centre of Swiss Post demonstrated against job cuts. They left the sorting centre at 07:00 in a procession of 30 delivery vans, driving all around the city centre, before returning back to the postal depot for a press conference.

The courier workers, supported by Syndicom, the Swiss Communications workers union, as well as Comedia, UNIA, the CGAS and the Geneva Socialist Party, were protesting against the merger of the parcels and the express units, which will lead to a 100 jobs cuts out of 300 positions, including 30 in Geneva, the canton most hardly hit by unemployment in Switzerland.

Another concerning fact is that Swiss Post had originally decided to outsource the express decision and is now « rectifying » its mistake which is leading to these job cuts.

The news about the merger was announced in December 2009. Syndicom then organised various meetings with the workers concerned and organised a small action at the end of January in the Courier centres as a warning.

Negotiations have taken place with Swiss post regarding a social plan, which has not been accepted by Syndicom yet. Indeed, the plan only provides for modest compensations and an unsatisfactory retirement plan. Furthermore, the plan won’t prevent any redundancies, which was the primary demand of Syndicom.

Today the workers and Syndicom are asking for job security for courier workers and an improved social plan.
