Xerox employees and union activists who were fired without warning on March 8 got their jobs back last week. At the company's call centre in Staten Island, New York, workers were fired after participating in a minute-long stand-up show of solidarity to demand that management begin contract negotiations.

The day after the action, workers were fired and ordered to immediately leave the workplace, escorted by security staff. Frank Buonvicino, an 8-year EZ Pass employee, was told, "I know you are one of the union ringleaders." Other workers said their union activity was mentioned in their termination meetings too.



Xerox's CEO Ursula Burns received 5,000 e-mails and phone calls from CWA union members, elected state officials, and other activists protesting the company's actions. This public show of support was critical in forcing the company to back down.



EZ Pass workers won representation with CWA Local 1102 last August, but the company has appealed the election and refuses to bargain.



Xerox now faces litigation for unfair labor practice charges.
