Cairo hosts 11th UNI Africa Executive Committee

THE 11th UNI Africa Executive Committee was held in Cairo, Egypt a year after the region held its Regional Conference in Hammamet, Tunisia.
In his address to the Executive Committee meeting from 9 - 11 March, UNI Africa President said the region has recorded progress towards fulfilling some of the objectives adopted by the Conference. He said UNI Africa has signed the second global agreement with South Africa’s largest retailer Shoprite Checkers. The first global agreement was signed with Nampak, an African packaging multinational company. He hoped the meeting would develop a workable action plan to achieve objectives outlined in the UNI Africa facing its future project and align them with the UNI Breaking through project. He informed the meeting that UNI affiliates in South Africa had started preparations to take over the hosting of the 4th UNI World Congress in Cape Town after the Nagasaki World Congress scheduled for November this year. And UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings attributed the success of the Shoprite global agreement to the commitment of unions and Shoprite workers. “We won this particular struggle because we had the commitment of trade unions and a strong Union Alliance. There was a conference of over 400 Shoprite shop stewards in South Africa and the Shoprite Union Alliance demanded for a global agreement with the company,” he said. He said UNI was sparing no weapons in its desire to achieve the target of 50 global agreements by the time of the 3rd World Congress in Nagasaki this November. He said UNI’s new Strategic Campaigns, Organising, Research and Empowerment (SCORE) headed by Adrian Rosenzvaig would focus on building strong unions using a dedicated organising budged. |
