UNI affiliates organising in Telenor's countries of operation met in Oslo this week to establish a global alliance.



Telenor operates in 14 countries around the world, mainly in the Nordic area, central and eastern Europe and in Asia. The company is focusing on Asia and emerging markets in Europe for its growth, since these areas are not yet saturated like European markets and provide greater profitability.



Telenor professes a strong policy on corporate social responsibility and promotion of labour rights, but at the same time, states that it operates one way in the Nordic area and another in other parts of the world. The company remains undecided on signing a global agreement with UNI which would guarantee basic labour rights for its employees worldwide.



UNI and its affiliates agreed to start organising campaigns in key countries in Asia, to continue to build strength in Europe and to press the company to sign an agreement which would enable the growth of free and independent trade unions within the company.
