UNI Europa Youth Steering Group Update

UNI Europa Youth Steering Group
On 3 and 4 May 2010 UNI Youth's Steering group met in Manchester. The group reviewed the UNI-Europa Youth Seminar that took place in Antwerp in January 2010. It was clear that all participants were very positive, it was one of the most successful seminars ever. The steering group came up with some new suggestions for the future seminars.
The next event is the UNI-Europa Youth Summer School in Riccione, Italy from 16 to 19 June. The steering members will actively prepare the summer school. A winter school for advanced youth representatives is in consideration but needs a closer look before starting it up.
UNI-Europa Youth has been invited to participate in the European Social Forum (Istanbul, 1-4 July 2010). We accepted the invitation and will make a presentation on "Youth Organising at Multinational Companies".
The Steering group also made progress in the different working groups :
1. Decent Work
- the Decent Work paper has been finished after consultation of the participants at the Antwerp Seminar
- activities will be planned around 7 October = World Day for Decent Work
2. Communications
- UNI Youth wants to reach 10,000 people by email and is seeking email addresses, the 10,000 email campaign is now officially launched
- the UNI Youth web contest has been launched but needs more publicity, a message will be sent out by email and facebook
3. Statutes
- an update and/or explanation of the UNI Youth statutes will be discussed in the next Steering group meeting.
To end the first day's meeting, the steering group members that participated in other UNI meetings (management committee, regional and sector meetings) gave their feedback.
UNI-Europa Youth fully supports the UNI Finance campaign "Banking on Workers' Rights" in HSBC and Santander (www.bankonrights.org).
On the second day's meeting, preparations of the UNI World Congress (Nagasaki 2010) were continued and other trade union issues were discussed.
