Leaders from HABER-IS met with UNI Global Union SCORE to discuss the structural reorganisation unanimously voted on by the members at the Turkish trade union’s May congress. HABER-IS’s Suleyman Yazir and Ali Akcan exchanged information with UNI’s Olga Vinogradova on UNI’s TeliaSonera project and other projects within the telecom sector. After speaking with UNI, the HABER-IS representatives said they were given a new impetus to organise their sectors.

In the final week of 2009 at the HABER-IS governing body meeting, the trade union announced the coming year as one dedicated to organising in the Information and Telecom sector — a goal they moved towards reaching after May’s congressional vote. The recently adopted plan established an organising department and a research and development department to set the union’s organising goals in motion. Since then, the trade union has been working on organising within several different mobile companies in Turkey.

After the meeting with UNI, Yazir and Akcan felt the global union’s strong support for their organising efforts and will accelerate their work in Turkey. The two leaders said they are preparing to join UNI’s global TeliaSonera project and plan to organise a meeting in Ankara to consolidate their efforts with other trade unions involved in the project in preparation for the September TeliaSonera Alliance Meeting.
