First Meeting of Argentine and Brazilian UNI Americas Women’s Networks

Buenos Aires. More than forty women leaders from different union organisations from Argentina and Brazil carried out the First Meeting of Argentine and Brazilian UNI Americas Women’s Networks in Buenos Aires, on October 7th and 8th. Colleagues from the two strongest women union leaders’ networks of UNI Americas gathered to exchange their experiences in terms of women’s organisation and training. “This first meeting is an accomplished utopia, and is achieved through the effort of all of us”, expressed the union leaders, and pointed out that they expected this to be the beginning of a long journey of joint activity which might reinforce the work of both networks, and be the driving force for the creation of new networks in the region. “This first meeting of networks from Brazil and Argentina, will enable us to achieve a joint wok plan which shall promote the development of support policies for the creation of more women’s networks in the region”, asserted Gladys Zamponi, Coordinator of the Argentine Network. For her part, Mara Feltes, Coordinator of the Brazilian network declared that “ this meeting will be meaningful as long as the objective of changing other colleague’s lives should be achieved through this joint action, and that besides, at the end of the journey we should agree on a work plan which might strengthen and reinforce this alliance so that it shall be the example to follow by other networks in the region”. Ruben Cortina, President of UNI americas, Verónica Fernández Mendez, Head of Equal Opportunities, and Olga Nelida Martín de Hammar, ILO External Consultant, Advisor of the Employment Department of the Ministry of Labour and of the Argentine Honourable Senate’s Culture Commission, also attended the meeting. By the end of the first journey and after the exchange of experiences, the colleagues held a debate and elaborated an action plan whose key objective will be the development of a joint work between the two networks; for that purpose it was agreed that: every November 25th, joint activities shall be carried out; that a coordinated, fluent and permanent communication will be kept between the network’s members; to participate at least with one representative of each network at the missions carried out to other countries for the creation of networks.
