The Nigerian union of Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers RATTAWU demands the government of Nigeria for a pay rise and a new salary structure for media and cultural workers in government-owned media. There is a noticeable pay gap between workers in media and culture and other sectors, which has not been corrected despite the frequent demands of RATTAWU over the years.



The government had met with the union twice in November to discuss the issue, but the talks ended in a deadlock. RATTAWU took on strike action together with the Nigerian Union of Journalists this week, which quickly lead to new negotiations between the government and the unions. As a result of these negotiations the government has confirmed the payment of fifty percent of the arrears owed to the members of the union. Due to these new developments the strike has been suspended.



UNI MEI fully supports RATTAWU in their fight for a fair salary structure for media and cultural workers and endorses the resumption of negotiation between the government and the unions.
