Sign the Written Declaration WD95/2010 and save Europe's postal services
The written declaration on the future of post can now be signed after it was launched at the last plenary session in the European Parliament.
The plenary session of the European Parliament which took place in Strasbourg 14-16 December 2010 was the first opportunity for MEPs to sign the written declaration on preventing the adverse effects of the implementation of Directive 2008/6/EC amending Directive 97/67/EC with regard to the full accomplishment of the internal market of Community postal services. Cornelia Berger from UNI Europa Post & Logistics was on site and spoke at the GUE/NGL group meeting to explain the meaning and importance of the declaration. She informed MEPs on the issues at an information stand in front entrance to the plenary hall.
The declaration can be signed until 8 March and Members of the European Parliament can with their signature contribute to secure, sustainable and quality postal services in Europe. Signatures from 50% of the MEPs guarantee that the topic will again come on the parliament's agenda. “We see the postal sector with all its stakeholders is not sufficiently prepared for the full market opening”, says Cornelia Berger from UNI Europa Post & Logistics, “The European Commission has failed in preparing the member states for the new challenges that the full opening of the postal market will bring. Therefore this declaration is necessary to ensure quality postal services in Europe in the future. UNI Europa Post & Logistics will take all necessary steps and actions to make this declaration a success and to again bring the topic in the European Institutions.” 35 MEPs signed at the first day of the plenary session. UNI Europa Post & Logistics together with MEPs are preparing a campaign and materials to make this declaration a success. Several activities and actions are already planned before March 2010. We will have an internet platform to inform our members and to show how many signatures have been gained. The information stand at the plenary sessions will be an essential element to inform MEPs and convince them to sign. The aim is to achieve at least 350 MEPs signatures and to make the declaration and its content public to all MEPs and the European institutions.
