The Zimbabwean Graphical Union elected their first women President, 33 year old Ms Nellissa Mukomberanwa at the Councillors meeting held on 15-16 October 2011. The position became vacant after the former President took up a full time position in the Union. The gender breakdown of the union is 70% male and 30% female and this makes her election even more significant and a break through for women union members in Zimbabwe.



Following her election, Nellisa said “I am grateful for the trust that this meeting has in my ability to be the President given the fact that the majority of our Union members are male.”



Ms. Mukomberanwa first became involved through the UNI CEP HF project that has been running in Zimbabwe since 2009 aimed at rebuilding the institutional capacity of UNI affiliates in Zimbabwe.



The meeting deliberated on the continued dismal economic situation in the Graphical Sector where workers are required to work short working hours, are being retrenched and at times have to work for two months without getting a salary.



The Councillors agreed that they will double their efforts to support the recruitment campaign that is currently underway.
