“The dream of the Arab Spring has not been realised,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings. “The military should step aside and stick to its promises of supporting democratic reform and civilian rule.”



New, independent trade unions in Egypt have joined the massive demonstrations but military and police have stepped up the violence in an effort to quash the protests. Dozens of protestors have been killed as the military tries to maintain its control of the country.



The International Trade Union Confederation has also called for military rulers to “step aside in favour of a genuine civilian transitional authority to prepare for elections and the adoption of a democratic Constitution.”

“In the euphoria after the removal of the Mubarak regime, the international community has been too complacent, putting its trust in a military which does not have the people’s best interests at heart. It is time for the generals to hand over power to those who have the will and the capacity to help Egypt on its way to the destination which the people seek,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow in a statement.
