UNI solidarity with locked out workers at Mayr Melnhof plant in UK
UNI Graphical & Packaging is holding its annual global executive meeting in Barcelona. Present are 25 representatives from key trade unions in Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mozambique, Norway, Sweden, South Africa, Spain, Tunisia, Switzerland, Uruguay and the United Kingdom.
Executive members have been informed of the ongoing dispute and the intransigence of the management at the Mayr Melnhof plant in Bootle.
Executive members said they are aware that for almost a month members of Unite employed at the Bootle plant have been standing in protest at the factory gates in an escalating row over redundancies.
They have been informed that MMP is attempting to force workers into accepting poorer redundancy terms and an unfair selection process. MMP management has imposed a lock out on workers since the 18th February following a series of legal strike action by members.
The Executive congratulated the members of the Bootle plant on rejecting the latest offer from MMP management that would have exposed their colleagues to dismissal
The Executive of UNI Graphical & Packaging gives its total support and solidarity to the striking workers and their families and demands that there be an immediate satisfactory resolution to the dispute.
The President of UNI Graphical & Packaging Tommy Andersson said, ‘On behalf of the Executive you have our unwavering and total support in your continuing struggle with your employer and calls on all workers in Mayr Melnoff to support the actions of the workers in the Bootle plant”.
Furthermore the Executive expressed its concern regarding the threat from the management of MMP in Tunisia that the company will close its operation in Sfax because of social issues.
The Executive is of the firm belief that this threat by the company is directly linked with the solidarity support expressed by the workers in Sfax for their colleagues in Bootle.
The Executive urged the management to enter into meaningful dialogue with the union to solve these outstanding issues.
