In Doha at the 25^th Universal Postal Union Congress, UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings signed a new memorandum of understanding with Edouard Dayan, Director General of the Universal Postal Union.



The memorandum sets out an agenda of cooperation between UNI and the UPU with a particular emphasis on sustainable development and innovation in the postal sector. It recognizes the value of human capital in the postal industry and encourages UNI and the UPU to develop activities which promote decent working conditions for postal employees. The new agreement promises to further strengthen the bonds between the world’s postal workers and the international postal community.



The Universal Postal Union is a special United Nations agency which fosters cooperation between the world’s postal operators and ensures a truly universal global network of postal services. UNI is an active member of the UPU’s Consultative Committee, a group of wider-sector stakeholders which engages with the UPU and its members.



The memorandum supersedes a previous agreement signed at last the UPU Congress in Geneva which led to a number of effective activities between UNI and the UPU. These included workshops on sustainable development in the postal sector in Asia, Africa and Latin America, work promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and a seminars promoting postal financial services and remittances.
