Eurofound published its European Jobs Monitor 2013: A polarising crisis: higher paid jobs prove most resilient. The Report describes recent changes in European labour markets following the onset of the economic recession and compares structural shifts before and after the crisis. The Report finds a strong polarisation in employment destruction patterns with mid-income quintiles being the most affected.



Low-pay and high-pay quintiles prove the most resilient with high-pay jobs in service sectors experiencing net job growth. Novel well-paid jobs were created in knowledge-intensive service sectors such as ICT, business consultancy, and health and education. Low-paid jobs have also increased in relative terms in sectors such as cleaning and personal care in social services and residential care.



Overall, jobs in the lowest and highest quintiles have fared better than mid earnings quintiles. Construction and manufacturing jobs for example, which witness just below median pay levels, have suffered the largest brunt of employment losses. The Report offers an analysis of structural shifts in labour markets and assesses employment prospects from gender and age perspectives.
