UNI Americas greets the Venezuelan people for the excellent demonstration of democracy on April 14, 2013. UNI Americas also congratulates Mr. Nicolas Maduro on his election as President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.



A voluntary turnout of almost 80% and the very few problems that occurred during the voting period, are proof of the legitimacy and success of the elections. Events like these strengthen democratic development in the Americas.



However, we must also express our concern at the opposition’s refusal to recognize the new president. Also, we express our concern for the acts of violence that this situation seems to have triggered or justified.



OAS, UNASUR, MERCOSUR, most governments in the Americas, including those that may be considered opposite political identities and international observers have recognized the legitimacy of the election and its outcome.



We hope that all Venezuelan political, union and social forces protect their democracy against threats to its continuity, and we call on the international community to ensure that Venezuelan democracy cannot be violated.



During the past years the Venezuelan society has reduced poverty and social inequality in an exemplary manner. We reject any attempt to destroy these achievements. And above all, any action that threatens peace in Venezuela.
