The Retail, Commerce and Clothing Industries General Union (RCCIGU) including the Insurance and Financial Practitioners Solidarity Sector of RCCIGU participated at the May Day Rally organized by the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions. “Fairness-Dignity-Family Friendly” was the main theme of the rally.



High inflation and the fight for fair wages were special issues stressed by the RCCIGU at the May Day Rally. The two topics were symbolically represented by a tiger and martial arts master mascots who candidly represented the harshness of high inflation and the determination and strength of the union in fighting for higher wages.



Over 5,000 workers, students and citizens participated in the rally. Donning raincoats, RCCIGU members were not held back by the wet weather and as they marched from Victoria Park to the Central Government Office (CGO) to submit a petition to the Hong Kong Chief Executive.



The petition demands the Hong Kong government to legislate on standard working hours, paternity leave and collective bargaining rights.



Marchers continued their journey from the CGO to Cheung Kong Center (CKC) and Hutchison House where the demonstrators gave full support to the dock workers who were on strike.



The dockers in Hong Kong have been on strike for more than a month in front of CKC and the Hong Kong International Terminal (HIT), demanding for better wages and working conditions.
