UNI condemns the Brazilian riot police’s violent response to the legitimate protests of the people who are calling for an end to corruption, demanding decent transport conditions and social justice.



UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “This oppression is a clear violation of freedom of expression. It is wholly unacceptable. The Brazilian people have shown courage and resolve in the face of the police brutality which is escalating. They are entitled to decent transport, healthcare and education systems. They have had enough of corruption and money being siphoned off by greedy companies profiting from construction contracts around the World Cup and Olympics. The Brazilian unions have said enough is enough and UNI joins with them in support of the people’s legitimate claims to justice and freedom of speech."

In a joint statement, the five largest Brazilian unions said the fight against transport fare increases across the country showed the dissatisfaction of workers subjected daily to inhumane transport conditions especially in large cities.

“The union movement supports the fight against the fare increases, against police violence and the right to demonstrate. It is essential that peaceful demonstrations advance for negotiations with the governments of the states and municipalities on the price of fares and conditions offered to public transport users,” said the statement.

Brazil has made great strides in the fight against inequality and poverty but is still lagging behind in terms of essential services. A situation put into focus by the millions being poured into the World Cup and Olympics at the expense of the workers.



UNI stands in solidarity with its Brazilian affiliates and all those in Brazil struggling for social justice, with the strong belief that we will win and justice will prevail.
