In response to the closure of ERT by the Greek government of 11 June and the first statement of Deputy Minister Kapsis in charge of public service broadcasting, UNI MEI Global Union expresses support for the demands of its Greek affiliate POSPERT to first restore ERT and then start an effective dialogue between the government and trade unions over the future of public service broadcasting.



The reform process of public service broadcasting in Greece will need time, needs to respect the integrity of ERT and its public service mission as well as the rights and dignity of ERT staff.



The Council of State ordered to restore the services of ERT. The Greek government until today has failed to implement the decision of the highest administrative court and continues to censure public service broadcasting and free speech in Greece.



We condemn the Troika’s role in the closure of ERT and its continued pressure on the Greek government.



Oliver Roethig, Regional Secretary UNI Europa, called for the immediate reinstatement of ERT: "It is unacceptable to leave an entire country in the dark without any form of public broadcasting service. The foundations of free information and democracy are at stake!"



We call on the Greek government to finally implement the decision of the Council of State and engage in an open and sincere dialogue with ERT staff and unions.



We urge the European Parliament to take action in order to restore public service broadcasting in Greece, to protect freedom of speech and to defend the dignity of the workers.
