ONE Standard mechanism to enhance protection of worker’s rights across ASEAN is a welcome initiative; said, Christopher Ng UNI Apro Regional Secretary,at a Regional Consultation jointly organized by ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRTC) and Law Reform Commission in Thailand.
Representatives of various ASEAN Senior Labour Officials (SLOM), AICHR, ASEAN Committee on Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (ACMW), ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Child (ACWC), ILO and ASEAN Secretariat participated at the Consultation held in Bangkok on the 2 December 2014.
Speaking during the panel discussions, the Regional Secretary commended the Organisers for their initiative to develop One ASEAN Standard and mechanism to uplift the rights of workers. While welcoming the proposed ASEAN Agreement, he emphasised on the need to ensure that the Agreement reflect the principles outlined in the ILO Core Labour Standards, especially ILO Conventions 87 and 98, concerning freedom of association and collective bargaining. Equally important, it must include practical and effective mechanism to enforce the implementation of the ASEAN agreement to protect and promote the rights of workers.
He thanked the organisers for inviting UNI Apro and ASETUC to the Regional Consultation and urge them to extend the consultation to trade unions in the various ASEAN countries.
