The producer of the film Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom, Anant Singh, launched a competition to take two Gymnase de Nyon students to UNI Global Union’s World Congress in Cape Town. Students will submit a Nelson Mandela themed project in art, music or film. In the competition jointly created by UNI Global Union and the Syndic de Nyon, the best two projects will see two students win a ticket to Cape Town.

Speaking in a video message Singh said, “I am delighted to welcome you to the project of the Nelson Mandela legacy. I wish all of you every success in developing a concept which will bring you to Cape Town.”

General Secretary of UNI Global Union, Philip Jennings, said “This is a great opportunity for students to see the real South Africa. They will be at the heart of a congress which sees thousands of union leaders from all over the world come together in the spirit of Mandela. Thanks to Anant, there will be an opportunity to have a tour of the movie sets of “A Long Walk to Freedom” – as well as the humbling experience of visiting Robben Island.”

Syndic de Nyon, Daniel Rosselat urged students to take part and reflected on his experience of being at Green Point Stadium in 2003 at a concert hosted by Mandela. Rosselat said “He was an immensely charismatic, humble person but his humanity shone even more than the big stars.”

This is the second time UNI have collaborated with the Gymnase and Ville de Nyon to host students at a UNI Global Union World Congress, with two students travelling to Nagasaki in 2009.

Daniel Fyfe, a 2009 winner, told students not to miss the opportunity, saying that “Nagasaki was a truly life changing experience”.
