Presenting the regional strategic plan 2010 - 2013, Regional Secretary Zakari Koudougou said UNI Africa would focus on doubling paying membership by the year 2011.



UNI Africa President Bones Skulu urged the Management Committee to work as a collective and prioritise membership growth, payment of affiliation fees and to translate Congress resolutions into action plans.



UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings said a strategic thinking process was being introduced in the organisation and that there was need to mainstream UNI’s values, principles and objectives in strategic plans for the sectors and the regions.



“To ensure UNI’s survival we have to be strong in the services sector. We now have a new campaigns and organising department in UNI. Africa should have benchmarks on how they will grow unions from Nagasaki 2010 to Cape Town 2014,” he said.



And the Management Committee has chosen “Growing unions in Africa” as the theme for the next Executive Committee meeting in Cairo, Egypt from 8 – 11 March 2010.



Strategies will focus on having organising targets at national, sub-regional and regional levels; active involvement of Executive Committee members and national liaison councils in organising campaigns; and targets for global agreements with multinationals.



Other issues discussed at the meeting included the visibility of Africa in UNI and UNI sectors, analysis of the Tunis Conference, regional budget and registration of the UNI office in South Africa.
