Although Bangladesh has ratified 7 out of 8- ILO core conventions including the convention 87 on freedom of association and 98 on right to organise and bargain collectively, but the implementation part has not been very effective. The union leaders of National Trade Union Centres of the country joined UNI affiliate, the Bank Karmachari Federation (BKF), in demanding the effective implementation of core labour standards.
“It was discussed and decide to work together for the protection of trade union rights and create joint initiative of all trade union especially from the finance sector and also at the national level” says Mr. Manzurul Haque - the General Secretary of BKF describing the outcome of National Policy Conference 13-14 June 2010 in Dhaka, Bangladesh jointly organised by BKF/ UNI APR0 and SASK Finland. During the opening of the conference, Christopher Ng – Regional Secretary of UNI Apro has expressed the solidarity from the international trade unions and wished for the success of the conference. Similarly, Sharan K.C. - Regional Coordinator of the SASK Finland and other distinguished speakers from the different organisations has appreciated the BKF initiative and reiterated their commitment for the support. The two days conference was well attended by the major national trade union centres, UNI BLC and their affiliates, including the youth and women committees and the Bangladesh Institute of Labour studies (BILS). The Conference deliberated on the thematic paper presented by BILS - a research based labour institute and adopted a plan of action for the lobby, campaign, networking and alliance, capacity building and empowerment activities to be carried out in the future. |
