By organising a forum on Walmart UFCW drew attention to the fact that the business model used by Walmart is not creating a global economy which is socially just and if left unchecked, will keep millions of people around the world in poverty. The forum heard from Nelson Liechtenstein who wrote the acclaimed book on Walmart: "The Retail Revolution: How Walmart Created a Brave New World of Business". The forum brought together internationally acclaimed speakers from academia, social justice, activists and unionists.
The forum was held less than a week before the meetings of the G20 and the G8 take place in Canada, and thus provided a platform for working people to have their issues adressed via the discussions on how the world's largest private employer operates. Though the G8 and G20 in the past have paid lip-service to the business thinking and ethics to the likes as Walmart, the Global Unions hope that the financial crisis have brought home the message, that we need a fairer global economy which respects and improves the living conditions of people in the real economy.

The Global Unions have issued a statement called "TAKE ACTION ON JOBS TO SUSTAIN THE RECOVERY" which strongly encourages the political leaders to learn from the past with special attention on the failed workings of the International Monetary Foundation. Undoubtedly, the austerity measures that the IMF is calling for weakens labour markets and undercuts workers' protection.
