Mexico D.F. UNI Americas attended the meeting organised by The International Metalworkers’ Federation (IMF): the “Strategic Meeting on Union Promotion in Mexico” celebrated in Mexico City on October 13th and 14th. The immediate objectives of the meeting were:
1. To jointly analyse experiences achieved and lessons learnt through the projects of union promotion in Mexico.
2. Exchange of information as regards current solidarity campaigns, as well as previous campaigns in which violations of labour and human rights, were highlighted.
Regardless of the previous issues, the growing existence of the so-called Protection Contracts in Mexico was to a great extent a subject for discussion during those days. In that sense, unions and participating Mexican union centrals committed to provide information as complete as possible before the end of the year, so that it can be possible to work with it in the preparation of a strategy aimed at promoting the presence, growth and reinforcement of independent unions.
It is necessary to oppose the labour legislation reform proposed by the government, and try to influence directly on the Mexican legislative bodies, so that these reforms shall be achieved and shall guarantee the existence of a real labour justice. There was consensus in the fact that there is a lot of work to be done as regards this last aspect; that demands practical and permanent solidarity from unions of Canada and USA in the framework of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and from the international labour movement, from direct funding organisations, as well as from the ITUC-TUCA, GUFs like UNI, IMF, ICEM AND ITF and others, based on a planned and well coordinated work between the different actors.
