UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings expressed his sympathy to the Thatcher family on their loss.



Asked by the press for his views on Baroness Thatcher's legacy, Jennings said, "Margaret Thatcher was a conviction politician who followed her instincts. Unfortunately her divisive political instincts were at odds with the best interests of working people. Her policies wrecked much of the real economy and financial deregulation sowed the seeds of today's financial crisis. She was the unwitting architect of the “greed is good” mentality of the 80s that lives on. She made war on the unions, destroyed the mining communities, wrecked UK industry and introduced a demonstrably unfair poll tax which showed how out of touch she was with the lives of ordinary people. As a Welshman I know first hand that the anguish of the miners and their families who suffered under her policies and lost their livelihoods has left a deep scar on Wales."



Jennings added, "Her remark that "there is no society" opened the way to smash communities, fuel social division and free market fundamentalism."
